Sensor Library and TEDS

The Sensor Library holds the sensors you measure with — their manufacturer, model, serial number, sensitivity, unit and calibration history. Once a sensor is in the library you can assign it to a channel in one click instead of retyping its data for every measurement. For sensors fitted with a TEDS chip, Deepsona can read the sensitivity directly from the sensor.

Three ways to set a channel sensitivity Sensor Library Assign a stored sensor .vlsensors.json / .senx TEDS Read from the sensor IEEE 1451.4 Calibration Measure with a pistonphone Channel row: Sensitivity + Unit stored as metadata in the recording

Opening the Sensor Library

The window is titled Sensor Library — Deepsona and closes with the Close button.

Sensor Library Layout

The editor is organised into five tabs, one per sensor family:

Below the tabs three detail panes show the selected sensor in more depth: Calibration History, Analog Channels / Pulse Geometry and Bus Messages / Bindings.

The status block above the tabs summarises the library, for example Sensor Library: Analog 12, Pulse 2, CAN/OBD 1, FlexRay 0, Ethernet 0, Channels 18, with the file path on the following line. When nothing is loaded it reads "No Sensor Library imported yet."

Adding an Analog Sensor

Click the add button to start a two-step wizard.

Step 1 — Choose Sensor Type

The window Add Analog Sensor — Step 1: Choose Sensor Type presents eight tiles. Selecting one pre-fills sensible defaults so you only have to correct the values that differ from your actual sensor.

TileDescriptionPre-filled defaults
AccelerometerUniaxial (1-axis)CCLD (ICP®), AC, 1 channel Z, 100.0 mV/g → m/s²
AccelerometerTriaxial (X/Y/Z)CCLD (ICP®), AC, channels X/Y/Z, 100.0 mV/g
MicrophoneSound Pressure (Pa)CCLD (ICP®), AC, 1 channel P, 50.0 mV/Pa → Pa
Impact HammerForce (N), 1 channelCCLD (ICP®), AC, 1 channel F, 2.25 mV/N → N
Force GaugeTriaxial (Fx/Fy/Fz)±15 V, DC, channels Fx/Fy/Fz, 1.0 mV/N
PU / PP ProbePressure + VelocityCCLD (ICP®), AC, channel P 50.0 mV/Pa + channel U 10.0 mV/(m/s)
Bridge / StrainVoltage / Strain+28 V, DC, 1 channel OUT, 1.0 mV/V → V
GeneralCustom / OtherCCLD (ICP®), AC, 1 channel Ch1, 1000.0 mV/V → V

Next > is disabled until a tile is selected. Double-clicking a tile selects it and advances in one action.

Step 2 — Sensor Properties

The window Add Analog Sensor — Step 2: Sensor Properties is divided into three sections. < Back returns to the tile selection; Save to Library adds the sensor.

Calibration History

The Calibration History pane records past calibrations of the selected sensor with columns Date, Ch, Sensitivity and Units. Add an entry with Add Calibration or by typing directly into the empty row at the bottom of the grid. The history is stored with the library and travels with it when you export.

Pulse, CAN/OBD, FlexRay and Ethernet Sensors

Non-analog sensors are defined on their own tabs and are added from the right-click menu.

TabColumns
Pulse SensorsName, Quantity, Unit, Pulse Logic, Sensor Type, Tips, Duty, Pulse Step, Transmission, TDC, Dead Time, Comment
CAN/OBDName, Listen Only, Bit Rate, Bit Rate FD, Protocol, DBC/ARXML, Comments
FlexRayName, Data Rate, ARXML/XML, Update Bus Params, Comments
EthernetName, ARXML, Comments

A new CAN/OBD entry is created with Protocol CAN, Bit Rate 500 kBit/s and Listen Only ticked. These fields are free text, not fixed dropdown lists.

Pulse-sensor fields are stored documentation for the tacho you used. The value the recorder actually applies during acquisition is pulses per revolution in the channel table — see RPM and Bus Channels.

Saving, Importing and Exporting

The library is an explicit file that you choose yourself — there is no hidden auto-saved location. Keep it with your project so that it travels with the measurement.

ActionFile typeBehaviour
Save library / Save As…*.vlsensors.jsonWrites the whole library. Default file name Sensor Library.vlsensors.json.
Import a Deepsona library*.vlsensors.json, *.jsonReplaces the library currently in memory.
Import an exchange library*.senxMerges — analog and pulse sensors are appended to the current library.
Export*.senxWrites an exchange file. Default file name Sensor Library.senx.
Opening a .json library replaces everything currently loaded. Save your work first if the in-memory library contains sensors you have not written to disk yet. Importing a .senx file merges instead, and it carries analog and pulse sensors only — bus definitions are not part of that exchange format.

Assigning a Sensor to a Channel

  1. Open the Recorder Configuration tab.
  2. In the row you want to configure, click the third small button in the Sensitivity cell — tooltip Assign a sensor from the Sensor Library (fills sensitivity / unit / type — you can still edit manually).
  3. Pick a sensor from the popup list. Each entry shows the sensor name, its sensitivity summary and its channel count, e.g. Mic #4189-A21 — 50.2 mV/Pa [1 ch].
  4. The row's sensitivity, unit and sensor type are filled in and the Sensor column shows the assigned sensor. Hovering the cell shows manufacturer, type, serial, axis, sensitivity and calibration date.

The same menu offers Clear sensor link (keep typed values) to detach the sensor while keeping the numbers. If the menu shows "No sensors in library — import a Sensor Library first", load or create a library before assigning.

The library also has bulk helpers at the bottom of the editor: Bind Selected Analog, Auto Bind and Clear Bindings. The Bindings pane shows the resulting Physical / Sensor / Sensitivity mapping.

TEDS Automatic Identification

TEDS (IEEE 1451.4) sensors carry their own identification data. Deepsona reads it and fills the channel row automatically, so a TEDS microphone or accelerometer needs no manual entry at all.

Reading one channel

  1. Connect the sensor and select the frontend.
  2. In the Recorder Configuration tab, click the first small button in the row's Sensitivity cell — tooltip Probe IEEE 1451.4 TEDS (auto-read sensor sensitivity if sensor is TEDS-equipped).
  3. The cell shows Reading TEDS… on an amber background while the read runs. Allow up to 20 seconds.
  4. On success the Acquisition Log reports the decoded sensor, for example [TEDS] Ch 3: PCB Piezotronics model333B32 S/N12345 tmpl25 → 100.4 mV/g.

Reading all channels

The chip icon in the Channel Settings header bar — Read all TEDS — probes every enabled analog channel in turn. The log summarises the result: [TEDS] Read All: 3/4 channel(s) decoded TEDS sensor.

What TEDS fills in

Channel fieldBehaviour
SensitivityAlways overwritten with the value stored in the sensor.
UnitSet from the sensor: Pa for microphones, m/s² or g for accelerometers, N for force sensors.
Sensor TypeSet only if it is still empty, derived from the unit (Pa → Mic, g / m/s² → Trial Acc, N → Force).

The manufacturer, model number and serial number read from the sensor are reported in the Acquisition Log so you can record them alongside the measurement.

TEDS is read-only in Deepsona. The values read from a sensor are written into the channel table, not back onto the sensor's TEDS chip — Deepsona does not program TEDS memory. To keep a sensor's data for reuse, add it to the Sensor Library after reading it.
Not every input supports TEDS. Support depends on the frontend and the channel: binaural head inputs, pulse, CAN, FlexRay and GPS rows have no TEDS button at all, and on some frontends only part of the analog inputs provide TEDS conditioning.

Troubleshooting

Message or symptomCause and remedy
[TEDS] Ch n: no sensor / not decodable. No sensor connected, the sensor has no TEDS chip, or the cable is faulty. Check the connection and retry.
[TEDS] Ch n: probe failed (channel/driver may not support TEDS).That input or acquisition path does not offer TEDS. Enter the sensitivity manually, assign a library sensor, or calibrate.
[TEDS] Ch n: probe sent. If sensor detected, row will auto-fill in next snapshot.Normal on some acquisition paths: the read is asynchronous. Wait a moment for the row to update.
TEDS read never completesThe read can take up to 20 seconds per channel. If it still hangs, stop Preview, unplug and replug the sensor, then retry.
The unit changed unexpectedly after a TEDS readExpected — the unit stored in the sensor takes priority over the unit implied by the sensor type. Adjust the Sensor Type afterwards if needed.
Assign-sensor menu is emptyNo library is loaded. Use Import in the Sensor Library, or create sensors with the wizard.
"Failed to import Sensor Library: …"The file is not a valid library file, or is open in another application. Check the extension and try again.
Sensitivities look right but levels are wrongCheck the Unit column too — sensitivity and unit must be consistent (mV/Pa with Pa, mV/g with g).
