An Active Picture is a whole Data Viewer page copied into a report document as a
live, editable object instead of a flat screenshot. After pasting into Word or PowerPoint you
can double-click the picture and keep working on it right inside the document — add cursors,
change axis ranges, move the processing cursor and watch the section plots follow. The curve data
travels with the document, so a colleague who also has Deepsona installed can continue the analysis
from the .docx or .pptx alone.
The page menu also offers two ordinary copy commands — Copy as Metafile (vector) and Copy as Bitmap (raster). Those produce a static picture. Use them when the recipient only needs to look at the result; use Active Picture when the recipient needs to work on it.
Ctrl+V).The page menu groups its commands as follows:
| Group | Commands |
|---|---|
| Tab ordering | Move First, Move Left, Move Right, Move Last |
| Copy & export | Copy as Metafile, Copy as Bitmap, Copy as Active Picture (embedded data), Export Image... |
| Page management | Rename..., Duplicate, Delete, Delete all... |
| Axis ranges | Reset Limits, Coupled Limits |
Paste normally with Ctrl+V. The document application recognises the clipboard content as
an embedded object and inserts it as Deepsona Active Picture. What you see on the page is a
sharp vector rendering — it stays crisp when the object is enlarged, and it prints at the full
resolution of the printer rather than at screen resolution.
If the default paste ever gives you a plain picture (some applications remember a previous choice), use Paste Special and pick the Deepsona Active Picture object entry rather than Picture or Bitmap.
| Item | Stored in the document | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Curve and colormap data | Yes | Enables in-place editing on any machine with Deepsona. |
| Page layout (grid, column spans, section rows) | Yes | Reproduced exactly as on screen. |
| Cursors | Yes | Type, position, snap and lock state, selected calculations and colour. |
| Labels (Label Cursor annotations) | Yes | Survive closing and reopening the document. |
| Axis form, ranges and units | Yes | Including logarithmic and dB axis forms. |
| Static vector preview | Yes | What machines without Deepsona display, and what is printed. |
A colormap page that has inline sections open (see Processing Cursor and Inline Sections) can be copied as an Active Picture as a whole. The colormap keeps its full-width row and the section plots keep their row underneath, exactly as in the application.
The height of the pasted object adapts to the number of section rows, so a page with sections does not come back squashed after you leave the editing state.
| Copy as Metafile | Copy as Bitmap | Copy as Active Picture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Result in the document | Vector picture | Pixel image | Editable object + vector preview |
| Stays sharp when enlarged | Yes | No | Yes |
| Can be edited after pasting | No | No | Yes (double-click) |
| Carries the measured data | No | No | Yes |
| Needs Deepsona on the reader's machine | No | No | Only for editing; display works without it |
| Typical use | Final report figure | E-mail, chat, quick paste | Report a colleague will continue working on |
Most often the object was pasted as a plain picture rather than as an object — check with Paste Special and choose the Deepsona Active Picture object entry. The other common cause is that Deepsona is not installed on that machine; a static vector picture is all the document can show there. If the copy was made in one Windows session and pasted after Deepsona was reinstalled, copy the page again from the current installation.
Copy the page again with the charts fully drawn on screen. Copying a page while it is still loading can capture it before the charts exist. Also confirm the page really has content — the copy commands are greyed out for empty pages.
Click clearly outside the object to leave the editing state; the preview is refreshed at that moment. Clicking inside the object frame keeps it activated.
The processing cursor follows the mouse across the colormap until you freeze it. Right-click the processing cursor and switch on Lock Position before copying the page. Unlock it again when you want to move the cut.
Another application can hold the clipboard open for a moment (input method editors, clipboard history tools, remote desktop sessions). Wait a second and repeat the command.
